Elway agent death likely accidental: report

NFL Hall-of-Famer John Elway's agent likely died as a result of a "horrific accident" when he tumbled from a golf cart being driven by the former Denver Broncos quarterback, a report said Friday.

Riverside County sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post that investigators had found no evidence of a crime after probing the incident last Saturday that led to the death of Elway's long-time friend and agent Jeff Sperbeck.

Sperbeck died from injuries sustained in the fall at a resort near Palm Springs, east of Los Angeles, last Saturday.

Bianco was quoted by the Post as saying that an investigation by law enforcement had found nothing amiss.

"This appears to be a horrific accident," Bianco told the Post.

"And unfortunately for all of those involved, one of the people –- well, a couple of them –- happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be."

Bianco told the Post medical personnel at the scene of the accident found no evidence that Elway was inebriated when driving the golf cart.

"It is common practice for medical personnel, whether it be an ambulance personnel or hospital personnel or even fire personnel, to call us after the scene of an accident because something doesn’t look right," Bianco was quoted as saying. "And this was not the case."

Sperbeck had been Elway's agent for more than 30 years.

Elway, 64, led the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1998 and 1999 before later serving as the team's general manager.
