The Granada branch of the Spanish People’s Party (PP) has proposed eliminating value-added tax on essential food items to combat rising living costs. Jorge Saavedra, the party’s congressional candidate for Granada, presented the initiative as a direct response to inflation and increased household expenditures under the current government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Speaking at a local market on Thursday, November 5, Saavedra outlined the proposal as part of the broader economic program led by PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo. The plan targets a reduction of VAT to zero percent for staples including milk, cheese, olive oil, eggs, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and canned goods.

Saavedra justified the measure by citing data indicating that the cost of these specific articles has risen by 42% since Sánchez assumed office. He noted that October inflation stood at 4.9%, creating significant pressure on family economies. The candidate argued that the proposed tax cuts would primarily benefit low-income families, pensioners, and households with dependents.

Beyond food, the PP’s platform includes reducing the energy VAT rate from 21% to 10% and doubling tax deductions for children from August through the end of the year. Saavedra also called for targeted support for producers, farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen, and small food retailers.

The candidate emphasized that if Feijóo reaches the Presidency, the PP will prioritize making food access more affordable. The proposal positions the opposition party as holding the current administration accountable for the recent surge in consumer prices.
